Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop
Free Minds uses the transformative tools of books, writing, and peacebuilding to create a community of support, assisting incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youths and adults to achieve their education, career, and life goals, write new chapters in their lives, and become powerful voices for change. Free Minds runs book clubs and writing workshops at the DC Jail and juvenile detention center. We also run a long-distance, correspondence-based book club with members in the federal prison. When members return to DC after their release, they join our reentry book club.

BreakFree Education Book Club
BreakFree is a national nonprofit that supports teachers in juvenile justice schools. Its curriculum, professional development, and student opportunities reach educators in facilities across the country, with a simple conviction behind them: young people in secure care deserve the same engaging, rigorous, joyful learning as students anywhere else.
Each school year, BreakFree Education sponsors a book club for classrooms in juvenile justice facilities. Participating teachers receive a class set of titles from the year's book list, along with discussion questions, comprehension guides, and student reflection journals built by BreakFree. Many of the books BreakFree has sponsored over the years appear on Read for Youth Justice's own reading list.The goal is to increase access to meaningful and engaging books for students, encourage reading and honest dialogue around contemporary fiction that delves into the issues young people in confinement face, and help schools expand their libraries.
